Holiday in the Country

Here in the bay of Husum, holiday is relaxation. In the little townships, you’ll find idyllic places at the dyke, impressive churches and thatched roofed farm houses. Get to know the countryside and discover peace and quiet.

Meadows, pastures and fields spread out around the port town of Husum, and are broken up by small forests and hedgerows and long walls of bushes that run through them. In the holiday region of the Husumer bay, there is room for holiday activities of all kinds. Belonging to Husum are also the neighbourhoods of Schobuell, Wobbenbuell, Hattstedt, Horstedt, Simonsberg, Uelvesbuell, Witzwort, Norderfriedrichskoog, Mildstedt and the Suedermarsch.

Members of environmental protection clubs explain the secrets of this unique landscape to guests while walking on the tidal flats or on a cruise. There are highly specialized plants and animals that have adapted to the changing tides or the extreme conditions of the salt meadows. And there are seals basking on the sand banks. There’s the local North Sea harbour porpoise. Or, there are the millions of migratory birds that rest on the North Sea coast in spring and autumn to gain strength for the rest of their journey. And, of course, there are the ten marsh islands, the small islands with no dykes that only exist along the North Friesland coast. The best way to discover them is on a boat tour through the tidal flats, for example in combination with our holiday offer,  "Excursion to the Horizon - Tide Travel in a National Park".

With the west wind at your back on the North Sea coast bicycle path, you can reach the Nordstrand peninsula, Hamburg marsh islands or the Koege in northern North Friesland, which is marshland that was still part of the tidal flats a few decades ago.

Southwest of  Husum,  the Eiderstedt peninsula reaches out into the sea and it is also easy to discover by bicycle. 18 church towers and proud Haubarges, farm houses that are typical to the region with their high roofs, mark the route for cyclists until on the horizon the most popular scene for photographs along the Schleswig- Holstein North Sea coast appears. That is the Westerhever lighthouse.
Discover the beauty of the Eiderstedt peninsula by bicycle, for example, as part of the package, "Gone with the Wind - Eiderstedt by Bicycle".

You can cycle to a country idyll in the interior, for example the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape where marsh ridges were formed during the last two ice ages. Hikers and riders can also find a expansive, clearly marked network of paths and lots of space to be one with nature.
Skaters use the paved paths on the dyke for their fast trips. Every year in May, athletes from all over Germany meet for North Friesland skating.
St. Peter-Ording attracts surfers and kite surfers. The holiday destination with the “largest sand box in the world” can be reached from Husum in just under an hour. If you want to get to the  waves quickly, you’ll find the best conditions in  Simonsberg, Husum/Schobuell and at the Husum Dockkoog.

But also those who simply want to just unwind and get to know the traditional life in the country don’t come up short in the holiday region of Husum Bay. In the communities around Husum, old traditions are still maintained, for example a large portion of the population still speaks low German. It’s not unusual for someone to get drawn into a “snack” whether it's at the local bakery or in one of the small grocery shops.
Traditions from the past are still maintained today. For example, in some communities, prawn shelling is demonstrated. If you’d like, you can try your luck with the little <North Sea prawns. In the summer months, klootstock jumping is shown. It’s a regional style of jumping with a long rod over wide furrows. And even if some end up going for a swim or at least get wet feet, fun is guaranteed.
