Discover the city & culture

The port city of Husum is a paradise for all those who want to combine their North Sea holiday with cultural experiences, relaxed shopping sprees and culinary delights. In the course of the century, the North Sea city has developed into a little "shopping and culture metropolis" whose special charm is known much further than the boundaries of the city.

The "Cultural Metropolis"

There are six museums in a population of around 23,000, two concert seasons of international acclaim, a widely acknowledged figure theatre festival, the Husum Film Days and there is Theodor Storm, a great son and literary ambassador. Very few equally ranked cities offer as much culture  as Husum.

Theodor Storm

People interested in literature mainly follow the footsteps of  Theodor Storms in his “Graue Stadt am Meer“. The residence of the poet in the Theodor Storm centre is still furnished as it was when he was alive. A look at the poet’s corner where he wrote his novella “Der Schlimmelreiter” shouldn’t be missed! Many other scenes from his biography and his literary works can be found in Husum and Husum bay.

Follow Storm’s footsteps through Husum and the  Schimmelreiter land!

Maritimes

If you’re interested in the Maritimes, Husum has two first class addresses to turn to. The  Nordsee Museum Husum has been showing off its new lustre since March 2007. Continuing on from the myth of the Rungholt settlement, the museum portrays the tides, the development of dyke construction and much, much more about the life of the people during high tide and low tide. One section is dedicated to the founder of the museum and his collection. In the 19th century, Ludwig Nissen, the son of a Husum tradesman, attained great wealth and influence as a jewellery dealer in New York.

Right at the port in Husum,  the North Friesland shipping museum provides its visitors with information about the history of whaling, ship construction in North Freisland, coastal fishing and about merchant shipping under sail. A genuine rarity is the “sugar ship”, a well known wreck of a freight sailing ship of the 16th century. It was discovered in 1996 in Uelvesbuell in the bay of Husum and conserved in a sugar solution and can be admired today in a specially controlled air-conditioned hall. The privately managed museum is known as a “lighthouse” of the Schleswig-Holstein navy museums.

You can find out more about the subject, "Holiday with the Tides"  here.

The Husum Palace

The  Husum Palace is the only country palace along the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. It is situated on the edge of the historical city centre in a park that is transformed every year in spring into a sweetly scented, lilac-coloured sea of blossoms when the crocuses bloom. Duke Adolf von Schleswig-Gottorf constructed the building around 1580 in the style of the Dutch renaissance and used it now and then as his residence. Today, the Husum palace has developed into a centre of culture. Every year, high calibre series of concerts take place there such as the “Young Masters” or the “Rarities of Piano Music”, which is well known internationally as the Piano Festival of Husum. There are also theatre performances as part of the international figure theatre festival, “Pole-Poppenspaeler-Days” that take place in the beautiful surroundings.

Country Life of North Friesland

In 1899, the local history researcher Magnus Voss had an idea that was copied later in many places. In order to show the people of the towns how well the farmers in the surrounding countryside lived, he had an old thatched roof house from his home town of Ostenfeld transported to the centre of Husum and reconstructed there. The first open air museum in Germany was born, the  Ostenfeld Farmhouse, which portrays a bit of the country life right in the middle of Husum.

What is especially imposing is the  „Red Haubarg“ in the town of Witzwort, located only a few kilometres southwest of Husum. The impressive white building with its high thatched roof can be seen from far away across the marsh and is a symbol for the former wealth of the farmers on the peninsula Eiderstedt. Next to the little agricultural museum that belongs to the local history museum of Eiderstedt, the "Rote Haubarg" is also home to a restaurant and cafe.

If you would like to really experience the country life up here with us in the north, there are many opportunities to breathe in some country air during the North Friesland Lamb Days and at the North Friesland Farmers’ Market. You can find out more about the subject, "Holiday in the Country"  here.

Just for Fun: the Pole Poppenspaeler Museum

In the Pole-Poppenspäler-Museum you can admire not only Kasper and Seppel, but also figures from Chinese shadow theatre, from Indonesia, Turkey and many other corners of the world as well as props and stage designs of puppet theatre. If your fingers get itchy, you can gladly help yourself. Hand puppet and marionette and paper theatres are available for you to try. In the summer, the Poppenspaeler car goes to the port and advertises the exhibitions, the Poppenspaeler summer performances and the international figure theatre festival which draws puppeteers from near and far to Husum every year in September.

Discover Culture

Our City guide is happy to show you the highlights of Husum, either one-on-one or in a group. For big and small.

The „culture path“ combines the 32 most important historical and architectural points between the water tower, the former shipyard, Nissenhaus and St. Juergen cemetery. You can get the “culture path” flyer at the tourist information and it is the ideal companion for discovering the town on your own.

Culture for Children

Children follow blue glazed tiles at the Husum port where the words of Storm’s poem, “Die Stadt” are imprinted. At four stations of this „historical play line“ , the history of Husum is developed in an entertaining way.

Further information about the culture of Husum Bay as well as the culture brochure, „highlights“ can be found at the Husum tourist information.

Shopping Enjoyment in a Maritime Atmosphere

No hectic, no pressure and a first class choice of specialty shops. The North Sea town of Husum is the holiday destination for all those who want to experience not only culture on their North Sea holiday, but also want to undertake a pleasant shopping stroll. The most important trading place on the west coast has become a little „shopping metropolis“ over the centuries whose appeal radiates Hamburg and Denmark.

Husum citizens and their guests most of all appreciate the maritime flair and the ever-present traditions. The market with St. Mary’s church and the Tine monument of Adolf Bruett, the homes of the Storm family and the scenes from the novellas of the great poet, the inner harbour and the small alleys all characterize the atmosphere of the town where the joy of shopping and cultural experiences are found side by side.
